From October 4 to 10, 2008, Montreal and Quebec City hosted the 21st Entretiens du Centre Jacques Cartier, a series of pluridisciplinary symposia whose goal is to forge lasting ties in terms of research and shared expertise between communities in Europe and America.
As part of the Culture section of this major undertaking, Culture Montréal, with the collaboration of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, presented the colloquium Cultural Governance in Large Cities: Issues and Opportunities. This international event was held in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, a bustling cultural district that is currently in full transformation.

The Colloquium allowed some 220 participants to listen to and exchange ideas with over thirty key specialists and cultural leaders from America and Europe. By addressing a new approach in cultural governance based on the mobilization and participation of all of the players involved, the colloquium explored ways to revitalize cultural action in cities that, like Montreal, recognize the arts and creation as an essential economic, social and cultural engine.

This reflection is particularly important for Montreal, a cultural metropolis, as we take on the challenge of implementing the 2007-2017 Action Plan, adopted during the Rendez-vous Novembre 2007.
