Every artist in Quebec felt a moment of exhilaration when Arcade Fire won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and shouted « Merci, Montréal » to a global audience. The next day Arcade Fire were everybody’s darlings. When was the last time the Assemblée Nationale passed a motion celebrating « the contribution of our francophone and anglophone artists in spreading Quebec culture on the international stage »? Thanks to Arcade Fire, English-speaking artists were catapulted from a barely visible parallel universe to the centre of a public celebration. Cultural leaders like Simon Brault of Culture Montréal and columnists like Marie-Claude Ducas, Patrick Lagacé, Émilie Côté and Brendan Kelly have gone on the record to say that Montreal’s multilingualism is an asset that makes the city modern and cool.
